Greener Pastures has just unveiled its first official teaser trailer and poster, bringing to life a dark, cinematic world inspired by the award-winning source material. Created by Michael Michalandos and Tim McEwen, Greener Pastures first debuted in the 1990s, following the existential journey of Trevor Bovis, a stud bull who defies his nature, stands on his hind legs, and walks into human society. The comic’s blend of satire, environmental themes, and surreal storytelling earned it critical acclaim, with 23 award nominations and a resurgence in 2024 with new stories continuing its legacy.
Now, the world of Greener Pastures has been reimagined for the screen in a cinematic short film, directed by Nik Kacevski (Skinford, Soulmate), written by Michael Michalandos, Nik Kacevski and Tim McEwen, and produced by MIK
Studio. The adaptation stars Maia Mitchell (The Artful Dodger, The Fosters, Good Trouble), Geoff Morrell (Top of the Lake, Rake), Matthew Backer (Play Dirty, Prosper, Watch Dogs) and Alistair Bates as Trevor Bovis, who embodies the
towering, mythic figure brought to life through practical prosthetics designed by Make-up Effects Group
A NEW TAKE ON A BELOVED STORY
The film reinterprets Greener Pastures through a rich, cinematic lens, transforming it into a visually striking and thematically layered drama. In this adaptation, Trevor Bovis has long since abandoned the farm, his horns brutally filed down as he lives a
soulless existence in the corporate machine. But when a desperate call for help brings him back to the land he left behind, he must face the past he tried to escape, the people he failed to protect, and the supernatural forces tied to the farm’s fate.
“This adaptation is something truly special,” says creator Tim McEwen. “It’s surreal to see a character I’ve drawn for over 30 years step off the page and into reality.”
Michael Michalandos adds, “We have a lot more Greener Pastures stories to tell. Seeing Trevor come to life in a world that feels so real, so textured, is beyond exhilarating.”
A CINEMATIC APPROACH TO STORYTELLING
Director Nik Kacevski brings his obsession with cinematic world-building and genre storytelling to Greener Pastures, crafting a film that is both grounded and visually heightened.
“I’ve always been drawn to stories that take a heightened concept and present it in a way that feels completely real, where you can touch the world, feel its weight, and believe in its history. With Greener Pastures, I saw an opportunity to build something visceral, textured, and emotionally raw. A story worth telling cinematically,” says Kacevski.
PRODUCTION: A CONTRAST OF WORLDS
Shot across two strikingly different locations, the film visually represents Trevor’s conflicted existence between two worlds. The corporate grip of Sydney’s Barangaroo serves as a cold, towering prison of glass and steel, where Trevor has buried his past and adopted a life of strict routine. In contrast, the wild, open landscapes of Wildes Meadow, NSW, capture the soul of the farm he left behind, a place now weathered, forgotten, but still alive beneath the surface.
This emotional collision of past and present made the production deeply personal for Tim McEwen and Michael Michalandos, who stood on set witnessing the world of their comic book brought to life for the first time. From the intricate prosthetic transformation of Trevor Bovis to the rich cinematography capturing the farm’s quiet strength, the entire process became more than a film, it became a homecoming for the creators, the team, and the story itself.
THE FUTURE OF GREENER PASTURES
The short film serves as a proof of concept, laying the foundation for a full-length series currently in development. With a striking visual style, grounded performances, and a story that expands the world of the comic book, the adaptation aims to introduce Greener Pastures to a new generation while honouring the legacy of the original work.
